Atlas Collectible Firearms is proud to present a true HOLY GRAIL of modern semi-automatics: the 1967 Smith & Wesson Model 41 Target Pistol, specially ordered for the U.S. Air Force, for the SR-71 Blackbird Spy Plane Pilot Survival Kit. This is one of only 30 such pistols ever documented for this highly restricted, clandestine contract, making it one of the rarest S&W military-related pistols in private hands.
This Model 41 features a 5-inch barrel that has been factory threaded for a sound suppressor, along with a unique slide lock elegantly executed to prevent action cycling noise. It retains the standard S&W Blue finish and original checkered walnut grips. The included S&W Historical Foundation letter confirms the pistol's shipment on March 3, 1967, as part of a special Air Force contract (F33657-67-C 1040) to Arthur Cook Supply Co. (Art Cook was known for having contacts with the CIA & supplying them with specialty weapons), configured with "sound depressors" and extra magazines. It is rumored that this small batch was destined for use with the SR-71 Blackbird because the spy plane program started in 1967/68 with 30 SR-71 which perfectly matches the records on 30 of these guns made in 1967.
The set includes an early hard-sided black briefcase with foam insert, two original factory magazines, the original Oxford Corporation Lightning Gunsight (early illuminated red dot sight) believed to be fitted to these specific pistols, and a wealth of historical documentation, including the original S&W letter and association journal write-ups. The original owner's subsequent letter to the USAF regarding the pistol was met with reluctance to provide details, further supporting its classified nature.
The pistol is in excellent collector grade condition, showing some minor handling/use and age marks. The highly significant Oxford sight is in good overall condition but displays signs of age and minor corrosion. The historical value of this complete, documented pistol is immense. An outstanding addition to any advanced collection of military, clandestine, or S&W automatic pistols.
