Manufactured in 1939, this pre-war masterpiece is chambered in .410 Bore (2 1/2" chambers) and features a desirable 28-inch barrel. The Model 42 is widely considered the finest small-bore pump gun ever produced, and this specific specimen has been elevated to a true work of industrial art.
The receiver has been masterfully hand engraved by the renowned artist Eric Boessler, whose signature is elegantly integrated into the scrollwork on the left side “E. Boessler”. The engraving features high-relief scenes of waterfowl in flight on the left and a hunting dog on point on the right, all surrounded by exquisite deep-relief floral scrolls. The barrel is clearly marked "SKEET" and "Winchester Proof Steel." This action is bedded in American walnut stocks featuring a rich gloss finish, crisp diamond-pattern checkering.
Mr. Boessler who passed away in 1997 was a highly revered German master engraver and a prominent instructor who taught generations of engravers in Germany. He was famously the go-to German engraver for Pachmayr, and his exquisite relief, scroll, and gold-inlay work can be found on high-end European firearms from makers like Krieghoff, Heym, and E. Schilling.
The mechanical operation is exceptionally smooth, characteristic of Winchester’s finest pre-war craftsmanship. The bore remains in very good condition.
