Atlas Collectible Firearms is proud to present a true Western historical showpiece: an ANTIQUE 1897 Colt Model 1878 Double Action Frontier Six Shooter revolver chambered in the rare and iconic .44-40 Winchester. This revolver has been masterfully engraved and inscribed, featuring a level of quality and detail consistent with Cuno Helfricht's factory engraving style.
The revolver features the long 7.5-inch barrel and has been meticulously finished in jewelers grade Sterling Silver Plating, accented by vibrant Fire Blue on the small parts. The entire surface is covered in exceptionally fine hand engraving. The pistol is fitted with early pre-ban genuine Elephant Ivory grips featuring pre-war style deep dish Colt medallions. Most significantly, the backstrap is hand-engraved with the name "Jack Hoxie", a famous Western Hollywood and TV actor from the 1910s and 1920s.
The pistol is presented in a deluxe fitted display case and includes copies of period photographs showing Jack Hoxie carrying a similar silver-plated engraved Colt Model 1878. While we have no direct documentation of ownership, the backstrap inscription strongly suggests this gun was custom made for him.
The overall condition is extremely high, showing very little use or handling since the custom engraving and finishing were completed. The bore is excellent and bright, and the chambers are excellent. The single and double actions are strong, and while the cylinder lockup shows minor movement, this is expected for an antique firearm of nearly 130 years. An outstanding addition to any advanced collection of engraved or historical Western firearms.
