Atlas Collectible Firearms is profoundly honored to present a museum-tier piece of American lever-action history: an antique 1896 production Winchester Model 1892 Sporting Rifle chambered in the legendary .44 W.C.F. (.44-40). This factory special-ordered specimen features a very rare configuration including a 24-inch half-octagon/half-round barrel, a half-mag magazine, and a rare flip-up front sight. The rifle has been upgraded with breathtaking master-level early hand engraving by the renowned Nick Kusmit, showcasing a majestic elk on the right side and a grizzly bear on the left, both surrounded by intricate foliate scrollwork.
The aesthetics of this investment-grade firearm are further elevated by a later-applied custom gold plating on the receiver and forearm cap, which retains approximately 95% finish with only light edge wear. The barrel retains a significant amount of its original factory bluing and the lever preserves some of its original color case hardening. This Winchester is factory fitted with original special ordered high-grade deluxe "XX" walnut furniture, correctly marked on the receiver tang, featuring a rare shotgun-style buttstock with a rubber plate and hand-checkered panels with unique "S" scroll accents.
Mechanically, the action is sound and the firearm remains in very fine condition with a bright bore featuring strong rifling. The wood shows honest light wear and scattered handling marks consistent with its age, highlighting the figured grain of the deluxe walnut. Serialized as 141701, this rifle represents a premier opportunity for the elite Winchester collector to acquire a documented, master-engraved antique that combines rare mechanical features with exhibition-grade artistry.
