Chambered in the revolutionary .31 Volcanic Rocket Ball caliber, this breathtaking specimen features the 3 5/8-inch octagon barrel configuration. Following the reorganization of the Volcanic Repeating Arms Company by Oliver Winchester on May 1, 1857, the newly formed New Haven Arms Co. restarted production, resetting the serial number sequence entirely. Bearing serial number 117, this spectacular handgun stands as one of the very earliest surviving New Haven examples left in existence globally, representing the direct mechanical stepping stone to the legendary Henry rifle and subsequent Winchester lever-action lineage.
This incredible historic treasure features a highly coveted, unengraved plain brass receiver, which represents an out-of-this-world scarcity compared to the more commonly encountered factory-engraved variations. The iron barrel assembly showcases its original factory blued finish, contrasted beautifully against the solid gunmetal brass frame and the case-hardened ring lever, hammer, and trigger assembly. Every single mechanical indicator reflects perfect museum-grade lineage, including the original post front sight, the frame-dovetailed rear sight, and the fire-blued trigger return spring. The matching serial number 117 is stamped cleanly on the left frame rail underneath the stocks, with the matching numerical designation stamped directly on the insides of both original varnished two-piece walnut grip panels.
The overall condition of this investment-grade heirloom is absolutely exceptional, retaining over 50% of its original thinning factory blue finish on the barrel, while the brass frame has matured into a gorgeous, uncleaned mustard-gold patina. The original walnut grips remain in very fine status, preserving over 90% of their original high-gloss varnish with only minor, honest wear along the bottom frame edges. Mechanically, the handgun functions perfectly with an excellent, bright & highly defined rifled bore that defies its nearly 170-year-old frontier lifespan. Every part on this gun is original the way it left the factory even the main spring is original but as you can see in the photos exhibits an extremely old brassed repair that remains 100% strong with a very strong hammer pull.
