Atlas Collectible Firearms is profoundly honored to present a jaw-dropping masterpiece of late 19th-century American lever-action history: an antique, factory special-ordered 1890 production Winchester Model 1886 Deluxe rifle chambered in the highly sought-after and rare .40-82 WCF (.40-82 Winchester Center Fire). This exceptional big-bore investment piece features a rare, special-ordered 28-inch octagonal barrel—measuring a full two inches longer than the standard 26-inch length of the era—equipped with its original Lyman front and Sporting Leaf sights over a full-length magazine tube. The receiver frame has been treated to exquisite, early master-level foliate scroll hand engraving set against a crisp punch-dot background with double straight-line borders, a pattern beautifully complemented by a custom premium sterling silver-plated finish across the action, lever, forend cap, and buttplate.
This Deluxe 1886 is stocked in highly figured, fancy walnut furniture correctly stamped internally on the left lower tang with assembly number "321", code "S", and the factory "XX" wood grade marking, with a matching partial number "321" visible in the top tang channel of the stock. The configuration includes a proper capped pistol grip profile highlighted by a classic ebony diamond wedge insert, Style H factory hand checkering panels, and a sleek, engraved steel shotgun-style buttplate. Accompanying this world-class firearm are two original Firearms Research verification documents signed by noted researcher Waddy Colvert. The final corrected letter authenticates serial number 49643, confirming its factory 28" octagon barrel, .40/82 WCF caliber, plain trigger, checkered pistol grip stock, and its direct factory shipment on October 24, 1890, under order number 11589.
The condition of this magnificent, antique Winchester is very good, showcasing a wonderfully honest, beautifully aged character across all surfaces. The 24-inch octagonal barrel retains an even, clean brown and gray plum patina with clear factory legends and barrel address text, displaying expected softening to the sharp edges and scattered light surface handling marks. The master-engraved frame retains virtually all of its custom-applied silver finish with superb scroll definition on both sides, showing only nominal handling evidence and very minor high-edge thinning. The deluxe hand-checkered walnut stock set remains stable and structurally sound, showing a deeply figured grain profile with a rich varnish coat, honest handling dings, scattered superficial bruises, well-defined checkering panels, and some minor wood storage rash along the toe line. Mechanically, the smooth model 1886 action cycles with robust precision, the ejectors throw with positive force, and the bore remains bold and strong with distinct rifling lines and minimal, isolated vintage frosting.
